Online Journalism Awards - data visualization edition

See some of the best interactive visualizations and multimedia narratives of this year's shortlist

October 2, 2013  |  CATEGORIES: Featured, Must see, News

It’s almost time to meet the winners of the 2013 Online Journalism Awards (OJAs).

Over the past decade, the OJAs have recognized major media, international and independent sites and individuals producing innovative work in multimedia storytelling. This year, the awards were modified to keep up with the rapidly evolving industry by including non-English entries in all categories and updating the student categories. Seven awards come with a total of $37,500 in prize money, courtesy of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Gannett Foundation, which also is supporting a new Watchdog Journalism category with a $5,000 award.

The shortlist with the finalists is available online, and winners will be known on the final night of the Online News Association Conference & Awards Banquet, which will be Oct. 19, 2013, at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Until then, we separated some of the projects that use data visualization as a core component of the story, a bit like we did in other major competitions and awards.

Many of the projects are well-known, like Snow Fall or Firestorm, but there’s always room to discover other interesting works in this type of competition.

Besides these projects, it’s important to notice that the shortlist for the Gannett Foundation Award for Technichal Innovation in the service of Digital Journalism includes D3.js (The New York Times), Quartz and Tarbell (Chicago Tribune). And, being this a ‘data visualization edition’ it obviously doesn’t implies that the other projects aren’t worth visiting. Again, the full list is available here.

Good luck to all the participants, and let’s wait for the winners to be announced!
