How the terrible tragedy in the Philippines was mapped by the media

November 13, 2013  |  CATEGORIES: Featured, News

Even before Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda struck the Philippines, Friday morning, forecasters warned it might be the strongest storm in recorded history. It was 3.5 times more ferocious than Hurricane Katrina – and big enough to stretch from Spain to Sweden. But the warnings had little effect.

This edition of Digital Cartography starts with some of the many interactive maps created around this tragedy. The death toll keeps rising, with over 10.000 lives lost and thousands more without home or shelter of any kind. Some reports say that more than 11 million people have been affected by the storm, but truth is that, with roads blocked and poor communications, a complete picture of how many people have been affected in all the Filipino islands – more than 7.000 – may not emerge for some time.

Now, it’s up to all of us to help the way we can, by donating money to organizations that are providing goods such as food, medicine and clothes. Here you have a list of some of the organizations accepting those kinds of donations.
