Hand-picked selection of cartographic narratives and storytelling

We have a bunch of amazing interactive maps for you, this week. From the Map of the Baseball Facebook fans – the first ‘viral’ visualization coming out from The Upshot, The New York Times most recent digital endeavor -, to National Geographic’s tribute to Arbor Day, NikeFuel Weather activity, Strava’s Global Heatmap and El Confidencial’s special piece on the destruction of the Bosaw√°s Biosphere Reserve, this selection is, besides inspiring, also quite diverse, when it comes to the topics in hand.

But before we move on to all the hand-picked interactive maps, we’d also like to mention a new experimental tool for cartographic narratives and geojournalism that our friends at O Eco Lab launched recently: Yby, a collaborative mapping platform that allows users to draw points, polygons and areas, and associate media content to them – like in InfoAmazonia.

The platform accepts submission of pictures, videos, text, besides color picking of icons, lines and polygons, plus importing direct locations into the platform with KML , CSV and GPX formats. One story or content submitted can be related to several geographical features. For example, a user can post a video about a road trip and associated it with locations along the route. All source-code is open-source and available on GitHub, and you can read more about Yby here. Feel free to leave you comments/suggestions for the developers via the issues section.

This one of the projects the team led by Gustavo Faleiros is bringing to the data journalism community. Another one that deserves attention is the “InfoAmazonia Network“, a project that has just been shortlisted for the Brazilian edition of Google’s Global Impact Awards. With this project, the team at O Eco Lab intends to bring real-time data about water quality to the inhabitants, institutions and NGOs of the four biggest cities in the Brazilian Amazon via SMS alerts and an interactive map application. If you appreciate this projects, feel free to vote and spread the word.
