Belinda Ivey, our featured Portfolio of the Week, co-owns KarBel Multimedia, a 4-year-old infographics design firm that specializes in infographics, data visualizations, interactive graphics and motion graphics. She is a veteran graphic journalist, with 12 years of experience working at four major metropolitan newspapers throughout the United States.
Belinda obtained her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida, and is currently seeking her master’s degree in motion media design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. But her real education came from her vast work experience as a graphic journalist.
She is skilled at infographic design, 3D illustrations, interactive graphics and motion media design. Her work has been recognized and decorated throughout her newspaper career, including numerous Society of News Design awards of excellence for her infographics. Her proudest moment was the opportunity to work with the Los Angeles Times graphics department to cover the 2007 massive wildfires.
In 2011, she left the newspaper industry to work at KarBel Multimedia full time. That same year, she began lecturing at the University of Miami, teaching infographics and multi-media design to their journalism students. She continues to lecture at various schools and organizations.
Belinda’s philosophy on infographics is simple: Content drives design. And here’s a sample of her work:
