Straight from the United States, this week’s portfolio belongs to the talented Bethany Bickley, a visual communicator who has been recognized bot nationally and internationally for her work. Bethany told us a bit about her professional background and motivation to continue to excel in editorial design.
In the spring of 2010, I graduated from Ohio University’s school of Visual Communication. The unique course load and my roles as design director for Southeast Ohio magazine and art director for Thread, an online fashion magazine that launched March of that year, helped fuel my passion for design.
After graduating, I went to The Huntsville Times in Alabama. There I developed a love for projects that were either hand built, hand painted or hand drawn. In April, I transitioned to The Virginian-Pilot where I use my creativity to push the limits on the page.
I’ve won both college and professional SND awards and have been recognized by the Alabama Press Association and Virginia Press Association. I’ve recently collaborated with an amazingly talented past professor of mine on designing the cover for Tim Harrower’s Newspaper Designer’s Handbook.
Collaboration has been a huge part of the process everywhere I have been. I’ve found working along side people who are passionate about what they do makes the entire process fun and elevates the final product.
