It’s been a while since we visited Brazil here on the Portfolio of the Week section, so today we’ll introduce the work of Alex Argozino, who has been producing hard news infographics for the past twenty years, at Folha de S. Paulo newspaper.
Besides the work in Brazil’s biggest daily newspaper, Alex has been doing other works for agencies and illustrating educational books for a while, and, as far as the work inside a newsroom, here’s what he said to us:
“Inside the newsroom of a daily newspaper, in addition to variables like ad insertion, closing time, all kinds of editorial requests and changes, and the news itself, we still have to deal with the lack of experience of most reporters, writers and editors in relation to information content of infographics.
Often, many works that publishers, editors or reporters give the final approval are simply incomprehensible to a reader. We should not overestimate the reasoning of visual reading of people who are not part of our “universe”
Outside the editorial industry, the proper use of data visualization can help companies to take a qualitative leap in internal and external communications, streamlining some actions. In some cases, excessive demands of various hierarchical levels and applications for those who do not work directly with information, leave some visual maps with doubtful results, even with the approval of the boards. That’s when the infographic designer has to show what is purely interpretive and will not work, and what does.
In a commercial standpoint, I think today, besides the work of data visualization, the most valuable product that an infographic designer sells is time. Time of understanding of facts, processes or events. The faster a person absorbs information through data visualization, the more time she has for other things.”
