The new face of Portuguese emigration

Generation Ymmigrant is my graduation project. The aim was to create a visual and communication strategy to a social and actual problem.

The focus of the project is the emigration movement that involves Portuguese youths; the identification of the factors that determine such movement and the analysis of the aspects that differentiate it from previous migration movements are the main concerns of this work.

A deeper understanding of this phenomenon implies the description of different aspects such as how many and what kind of people are involved, their conditions and the reasons why they are leaving their country.

With 10 Million inhabitants, Portugal is the fourth country with more emigrants in Europe.The actual Portuguese daily migratory balance is (-)100 people. Most of these emigrants are graduate young people aged between 20 and 35.

With this title I intend to establish the relationship between the migration phenomenon and the generation it affects, young people belonging to Generation Y,born between 1980 and 1990. It may be considered the most qualified generation ever existing in Portugal: ambitious, multi-tasker and demanding, they ask for results, sometimes far too early.

They have accomplished what was expected from them: they have studied further than previous generations, they speak foreign languages and have different kinds of skills, often acquired through internet tutorials. They are educated and travel a lot. They master the new technologies and can easily adapt themselves to innovations and new conditions. They grew up in comfortable and prosper environment, and might have been too much protected in their childhood. They emigrates for not having in their country the conditions to fulfill their desires and meet the expectations created by long years of study and development.

Ambitious and very active they do not fit in a stagnant job market. Whenever, with much effort they find a job, they rarely have a chance to advance their career. Being unemployed does not seem to be compatible with your way of being. Thus, it becomes understandable why they look for other ways of life and try to find other places because achieving their personal fulfillment may be more than getting monetary success or status.

This work has two parts:

The first part will develop an awareness campaign for the theme, .It focuses on its most relevant aspects in order to draw people’s attention to the extent of the problem and its impact on society, highlighting, some facts: the high daily Portuguese migratory balance [(-) 100], the huge number of young people involved;, the consequences of this movement in Portuguese society. This part of the work has the form of a mural and involves posters and leaflets as well.

“- (100) Faces” aims at drawing people’s attention to the emigration movement that affects Portuguese youths. The intention is to make people conscious of the seriousness of this problem and help all those who might have to face it. In fact, this problem concerns all of us, the faces we came across with everyday This is happening today, no one knows what the future will be.

By the use of the photos of 100 students (representing the daily Portuguese migratory balance), different graphic objects were created (a mural, posters, leaflets). Their aim is to make people aware of the extension of the migration problem, based on the photos and the sentences they illustrate.

*Hello, my name is Sofia and i have recently graduated in Communication Design in the Faculty of Fine-Arts of Lisbon. Besides design, I love toasts with a cup of meia-de-leite (coffee and milk) in the morning. When i was a kid I dreamed about being a painter or a writer. Now i want to be a communication designer and a children’s books illustrator. Inside i’m still a child, a child that worries too much about silly things and grown up stuff while wearing insane curly hair. A child that wants to grow up and doesn’t fear collapse, enjoying the sublime show that life is and simultaneously eating lots of toasts and drawing in napkins.
