The Cartographic Portraits of Ed Fairburn

Mixing the multicolored, patterned surface of maps with the uniqueness of the human face.

December 3, 2012

Ed Fairburn is an multidisciplinary artist that works using a flexible range of tangible media across a wide range of surfaces and contexts. One of his most impressive projects is the Map Portraits series, mixing the multicolored, patterned surface of maps with the uniqueness of the human face.

According to Ed, “Through this body of work, I’ve examined the patterns and structures which exist across the body. Emphasis is placed on the ‘fragmented’ texture of the skin, a process which has encouraged my work to evolve from its occupation of plain paper to the potential occupation of other, pre-fragmented or pre-patterned surfaces. Such as… maps.”
