Mapping the European Elections and other issues, in dynamic and interactive fashion

Every time a big election happens, it’s common to see interactive maps depicting the probabilities and results, mostly from news portals, and with the European Elections that took place between 22 and 25 May was no different. We have some of those maps, but our opening pick goes to another piece – actually, a tool -, developed by DC Action for Children and announced yesterday: The DC KIDS COUNT Data Tool 2.0 .

Founded in 1992, DC Action for Children is a nonprofit organization that provides data-based analysis and policy leadership on critical issues facing DC children and youth, to promote policies and actions that optimize child and family well- being. DC Action for Children is the home of DC KIDS COUNT®, tracking key indicators of child and youth well-being and neighborhood well-being for children to promote ways to secure better futures for all children and to raise the visibility of children’s issues through a nonpartisan, evidence-based lens.

The organization designed the set of interactive maps to bring to life the data they have collected on the well-being of children and families, neighborhood by neighborhood. The indicators and measures reflect DC KIDS COUNT’s neighborhood-centered analytical frame. Nearly all DC KIDS COUNT indicators and measures are calculated at the neighborhood level, which allows them to evaluate the assets and needs of neighborhoods where DC’s children live, play and learn. An interesting project that should inspire other organizations worldwide.
