After dedicating the previous six editions of Portfolio of the Week to Brazilian infographic designers, we get back ‘on the road’, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to start this trip. Working currently at the South China Morning Post alongside Adolfo Arranz (who we had the pleasure to interview just a couple of weeks ago), Alberto Lucas López shared with us some of his amazing infographics, and told us how he began his professional career.
“While I was studying Journalism at University of Navarra (Spain), I had the great fortune of discovering the subject of Infographics. In the first class, I was surprised by its basic concepts. In the second, I started to believe the maxim which claims that infographics is “JOURNALISM IN CAPITAL LETTERS”. By the third class, I was already addicted to this passionate world.”
“During the summer of 2008, I became part of the Infographics section at ‘El Correo‘ newspaper (Spain). Our works were published in most of the regional newspapers of the Vocento group. In July 2011, I became part of the Design section, where the newspaper´s daily pages are sketched, as well as its supplements and weekly magazine ‘GPS’. That same year, ‘El Correo’ was awarded the continent’s best-designed regional newspaper at the European Newspaper Design Award. In June 2012, I returned to the Infographics section at Vocento, where I designed alongside JM.Benítez, the special coverage of the London Olympic Games: thirty-two explanatory graphics detailing each sport.”
“In March 2013 I completed a Professional Motion Graphics Masters Degree in Madrid, where I worked as a freelance, and in September I moved to the Far East, to work as a Senior Infographic Designer at South China Morning Post newspaper in Hong Kong.”
