We don’t often open this weekly round up og interactive maps with announcements, but Google has just renamed Google Maps Engine Lite to My Maps, in a move that tries to consolidade the platform as an effective entry level, tool for non-developers to quickly create simple maps – Keir Clarke, over at Google Maps Mania, describes this as “probably a sensible move by Google”, and if you go to Google Maps Gallery you’ll see plenty of publicly shared custom maps of all types, in case you’re not familiar with the types of maps created with Google Maps Engine Lite. By the end of this year, all maps created in classic Google Maps will automatically upgrade to the new My Maps.

As for the interactive maps, among the two dozen interesting projects we selected, there’s InfoAmazonia’s new special about water and diseases in the Amazon; a new post from CartoDB’s Mapping the Invisible series; the maps included in The New York Times’ interactive piece How ISIS Works; and The Welcoming Face of North Korea, a cartographic narrative about Tourism in North Korea by Roman Kalyakin – just to name a few.
