The work of Jan Hilken

A Luxembourg-based German designer that helped an agency to create an infographic magazine

November 18, 2014

Once in a while, we try to go beyond the traditional newsroom environment and bring the work of designers that, despite not being part of a graphics desk, have a body of work or ongoing publishing project interesting enough to be featured as Portfolio of the Week. That’s the case of Luxembourg-based German designer Jan Hilken. Jan helped the agency he’s working for, HUMAN MADE, to publish 137.5, an infographic magazine that visualizes complex correlations or simple ideas nearly without text.

Born in Germany, in 1988, Jan studied from 2008-2013 communication design at the University of Applied Science Trier and Ecole professionnelle supérieure d’arts graphiques de la Ville de Paris (2010-2011).

“When I went back in Trier (2011), I discovered my passion for infographics and lived it up in my term paper “cui bono“ and thesis “ent-decken“. So, since the Summer of 2013 I’ve been working atHUMAN MADE Communication & Studies in Luxembourg, were I co-foundet the agency’s own infographic magazine 137.5.”

“I try to make my infographics so that they work alone or in series , in all media and also as decoration . Here in Luxembourg we often have the problem that we have to create content in different languages (Luxembourgian, French, Portuguese; German is the most widely spoken).”

“So I try to bridge the language barrier with the help of iconography and numbers, what I still do not succeed , but I am working on.”

Here are the examples Jan shared with us, all published in 137.5 infographic magazine:
