Digital Cartography [81]

December 3, 2014

The first round up of our freshly redesigned website comes fully packed with interesting examples of interactive maps.

In addition to the typical pieces that we see during this time of year, about Thanksgiving and Black Friday, among the 15 highlighted projects there’s also the Financial Times’ visualization depicting Isis’ advance in Iraq and Syria – undoubtedly one of the most dreadful events of the year that is almost ending. A map developed by Steve Bernard, John Burn-Murdoch, Chris Campbell, Callum Locke, Martin Stabe, Erika Solomon and Robin Kwong, that opens up our post, followed by Miami Feels, a project by artist Jonas Fund. This project will measure the sentiment (happy, sad, relaxed, excited) of social media posts within a 5000m radius of Art Basel, in order to determine the most desirable location at any given time throughout the Art Basel fair’s week, from December 2-7.

And finally, for some geek fun – and exemplifying perfectly the range of topics covered in this selection -, you can explore the Star Wars Galaxy Map, a two dimensional interactive atlas of a galaxy far, far away, one of the many gems brought to our attention by Keir Clarke, over at Maps Mania.

Here are all the picks of the week:
