Interactive Inspiration [125]

Impressive interactive visualizations published recently online

April 3, 2015

We just got back from the unique experience of attending Malofiej 23, and that means that we have quite a catching up to do, when it comes to these weekly round ups. If you want to know more about the world’s top infographic event, check out the all the posts with our exclusive coverage.

And let’s move on to the highlights of today’s post:

A 3-D View of a Chart That Predicts The Economic Future: The Yield Curve | The New York Times

As we showed last week, The New York Times was, once again, the great winners of the online categories of Malofiej 23, so it’s really not that much of a surprise that the first pick of this Interactive Inspiration comes out of one of world’s most innovative graphics desks. This time, Gregor Aisch and Amanda Cox provide a “3-D view of a chart that predicts the economic future“, highly praised by the data visualization community, with reviews by Nathan Yau, Andy Kirk, among others.

The Demolition of Workers’ Comp | ProPublica

Over the past decade, state after state has been dismantling America’s workers’ comp system with disastrous consequences for many of the hundreds of thousands of people who suffer serious injuries at work each year, a ProPublica and NPR investigation has found. The full article by Michael Grabell, ProPublica, and Howard Berkes, NPR, includes several interactive visualizations.

Scalling Everest | The Washington Post

Signed by The Washington Posts’s Richard Johnson, Bonnie Berkowitz, and Lazaro Gamio, this interactive is a perfect example of “Scrollytelling” – a type of online visual narrative that is becoming popular even beyond the top online news outlets, and that we recently heard about from Geoff McGhee, over at Malofiej 23. In this new piece, you’ll get to to see what climbers that are gathering in Nepal to begin a months-long odyssey up the world’s highest mountain will experience on Everest’s South Col, the most popular route up the mountain.
