[This is a guest post by Giulia Voltini* and Elisabetta Bianchi**, talking about their project, Acqua // Infographic Mock up]
We made this project during the academic year 2011/2012 at NABA in Milan, the aim was to create an infographic design about the waste of water using a 3D mock up technique with paper.
We based upon the data that came out from the Stockholm World Water Week 2012. The theme for this year was Water and Food Security.
Water is needed to grow not only everything we eat but also to produce almost all the products we use every day. This water is either supplied by nature as precipitation and added by people during the growing and production process. You can’t tell by the size of a product or the appearance of a food how much water was actually used to produce the item, but it’s surprising how much water it takes to make just a single hamburger: producing 1 single hamburger uses 24 liters of water.
If we cut our food waste by half it would have the same effect on global warming as taking half the cars off our roads.
The amount of water that can be saved by reducing food waste is much larger than that saved by low-flush toilets and water-saving washing machines.
Food waste is largely a result of inefficient harvesting, transportation, storage, processing, and packaging. The waste tends to be highest in developed countries with large urban populations.
We need to eat in ways that save our health, and our environment.
Water is a really important resource on our planet, but it’s not unlimited.
