Digital Cartography [102]

The top Interactive maps and cartographic narratives of the week

June 17, 2015

The first Statistical Atlas of the United States, authored by Francis A. Walker, was published in 1874, and it’s not rare for us to feature some of the visualizations published in those atlases in our weekly column dedicated to vintage maps, charts and infographics. But what has this to do with digital cartography?

Well, the Census Bureau produced the last atlas in 2007 (with data from the 2000 census), and since it has been cut down due to governmental budget constraints, Nathan Yau decided to publish his own updated version, using publicly available data from official government sources, and R to create the maps and graphics.

We open this post with that project – that we just wish it could be explored in a more interactive fashion – , followed by all the interactive maps that caught our attention this week.
