Digital Cartography [103]

Interactive maps to tackle urgent issues such as climate change and water management, and more.

June 24, 2015

We recently came across a great resource for those interested in cartography and map-making, but don’t have the proper training to create them. Nathan Yau shared on his blog this quick reference guide for temathic cartography, produced by Axis Maps.

As they explain, “this is by no means a replacement for a full textbook on cartography; rather it is a quick reference guide for those moments when you’re stumped, unsure of what to do next, or unfamiliar with the terminology. While the recommendations on these pages are short and not loaded with academic references, please appreciate that they represent a thoughtful synthesis of decades of map-making research.”

Now, as for the digital maps we chose for this round up, we’ll begin with our top highlights:

A World of Change: Climate change through the lens of Google search | Pitch Interactive / Google Trends

As part of the relaunch of Google Trends, the company, through the Google’s News Lab, teamed out with Pitch Interactive to develop this stunning visualization of how people living in the world’s 20 major cities search for words and phrases related to climate change.

NASA satellite data show the Earth is running out of groundwater | The Washington Post

With all the droughts happening across the world, water management has clearly become one of the most urgent challenges for governments and citizens to tackle. According to a recent study by NASA, twenty-one of the world’s 37 largest aquifers have passed their sustainability tipping points, meaning more water was removed than replaced during the decade-long study period. This interactive map by The Washington Post breaks down the situation on those aquifers, and for more details read the related article.
