Digital Cartography [134]

Online maps and cartographic narratives produced by newsrooms and independent designers

April 13, 2016

Our opening pick for today’s Digital Cartography has been around for several weeks now, but since we haven’t included it in one of our previous round ups, we decided to give to American Panorama a proper shout out.

This project – a modern take of the “ideal historical atlas” – was developed by The University of Richmond’s Digital Scholarship Lab and Stamen Design, with the support of Andrew W Mellon Foundation. You can read more about the project at the University of Richmond Press Release, Stamen’s blog post, CartoDB’s Blog and CityLab’s blog post. And we’ve actually mentioned it recently, in another one of our regular columns, Viz on Video, where you’ll see the talk given by talk by Stamen‘s Alan McConchie about the project.

Currently, you’ll find four interactive maps available (screenshots below). However, it is an ongoing project, and, according to the website, in the coming months they’ll be adding maps on redlining during the Great Depression, on urban renewal in postwar America, on presidential voting, among others.
