Eu sempre quis fazer um projeto que trabalhasse com o Odyssey, uma ferramenta de “storytelling” desenvolvida pela CartoDB que engloba mapas e outros elementos novos de formatação de texto e imagens.
Nesse artigo, vou tratar da versão em de slide do Odyssey – deixando as versões de scroll e torque para outra ocasião.
Apesar de ser uma boa ferramenta, o Odyssey ainda tem diversos “bugs”, especialmente na hora de escrever em Markdown ou acrescentar outros basemaps. Além disso, a versão de slide, não é totalmente responsiva — logo, fica bem ruim em dispositivos móveis (o mapa é responsivo, mas a caixa de legenda , ou “sandbox”, não).
O problema não está na linguagem de Markdown – que eu como um bom usuário do editor de texto iA Writer Pro prefiro usar em detrimento ao “rich text”, que é um saco de ficar ajustando a formatação toda hora – mas sim nos ajustes que os desenvolvedores do Odyssey fizeram nessa linguagem para que o aplicativo possa entender as coordenadas geográficas. Haja paciência no mundo para lidar com aquelas apóstrofes (ou seriam vírgulas) que ficam entre o título e o texto e que contém as diretrizes do mapa.
Além disse, aprendi da pior maneira que é recomendável mudar o basemap — se você quiser, claro — apenas após ter acabado de escrever todo o código. Caso contrário, um tremendo de um bug simplesmente faz o mapa sumir a cada alteração que você faz na caixa de edição. No meu caso, usei o Dark Matter Lite.
Outro problema do Odyssey também é a falta de oportunidades para customizações. Claro, ele usa Markdown, que permite pouquíssima formatações de texto em vista dos ganhos de padronização e facilidade de edição. Mas, mesmo assim, faltou um jeito de poder editar o tamanho da fonte e, principalmente, coisas como cores e tamanhos da caixa.
É claro que é possível fazer tudo isso se você instalar o Odyssey.js em seu servidor e mexer no código fonte, mas é um trabalho que, para se fazer sozinho junto a todas as outras coisas que o projeto requer (como analisar os dados, fazer o texto, preparar o CMS), simplesmente não vale a pena fazer se você não tem essa inclinação.
Outra coisa chata é ficar acrescentando manualmente as coordernadas no Sandbox ou ficar caçando a posição no mapa do lugar que você quer marcar. Deveria ter um jeito mais fácil, ainda mais pra CartoDB, que já sua ferramenta homônima tão sensacional de mapas, que tem um produto para acrescentar coordenadas automaticamente.
Dito tudo isso, eu recomendaria o Odyssey. É simples de usar, simples de “embedar” e certamente simples de entender. Se você tiver paciência e quiser uma ferramenta para fazer uma visualização simples de dados envolvendo mapas, é uma boa escolha. O mais grave mesmo é a falta do suporte responsivo para mobile.
Como a própria CartoDB vem falando, o Odyssey é um projeto em andamento e deve ser melhorado com o passar do tempo, dado que ainda gere interesse nas pessoas. Se parar aonde está, não será de todo ruim, mas também deixará a desejar.
