Since Sept. 11, 2001, the CIA has been accused of rendering 136 suspected terrorists to states such as Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Uzbekistan. The report “Globalizing Torture” was written by Amrit Singh, the daughter of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and a senior legal officer at the human rights group Open Society Justice Initiative. In the report, she alleges 54 foreign countries aided the CIA “in various ways, including by hosting CIA prisons on their territories; detaining, interrogating, torturing, and abusing individuals; assisting in the capture and transport of detainees; permitting the use of domestic airspace and airports for secret flights transporting detainees; providing intelligence leading to the secret detention and extraordinary rendition of individuals; and interrogating individuals who were secretly being held in the custody of other governments.” The National Post takes a look into the allegations around the murky world of extraordinary rendition.
