In developing countries, modern energy services, crucial to human well-being and to a country’s economy, are insufficient, according to the International Energy Agency. Today, 1.3 billion people lack access to the most basic energy services — which is essential for the provision of clean water, sanitation, health-care and for the provision of reliable and efficient lighting, heating, cooking, mechanical power, transportation and telecommunications. These people are mainly in developing Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and in rural areas.
