We surveyed 16 comedically significant female sitcom characters to see what their defining character traits revealed about the evolution of women’s roles. These influential characters were evaluated according to whether they exemplified stereotypically “masculine” or stereotypically “feminine” qualities, both positive and negative. For example, a “masculine” character might be professionally successful (positive) and cynical (negative). A “feminine” character might be sweet (positive) and ditzy (negative).
